How do I know a price on screen is live?
Trade › the market header, the charts, the order ticket and the market lists; the phone
Every price comes from Hyperliquid and is checked as it arrives. One with no word for over a minute, from before a dropped connection, or far from Hyperliquid’s own mark turns grey with a dotted underline; point at it, or press the note beside it, to read why. A dash means no figure yet. A guess is never shown.
Step by step
- A grey price with a dotted underlineNo word from Hyperliquid for over a minute, while the app keeps reconnecting. Point at it to read why; it turns back the moment a new price arrives. The market header, every chart in a grid and the market lists show it the same way; on a phone the line under the price says no update for over a minute.
- Connection droppedThe live connection to Hyperliquid broke. Prices and the order book from before the break stay grey until fresh ones arrive; the book is rebuilt from a new read rather than patched.
- Checking a price jumpA trade more than 5 % from Hyperliquid’s own mark price on a main market (10 % on a HIP-3 or spot one) is held back until the next mark read: shown if that read agrees, dropped if not. When two mark reads in a row disagree with the trades, the price says it is not verified: check it on the exchange before you trade.
- Price not verifiedThe order ticket says why. A Market or trailing order waits until the price is confirmed, because it fills at whatever the market gives. A Limit or Stop order goes out at the price you type, under a note to check it against the exchange.
- A dash in place of a numberThere is no figure yet: the first price is on its way, or Hyperliquid has none to give, such as a 24h change for a market with no price a day ago, or one with no trade today that still sits at yesterday’s price. A dash is never a zero, and a zero is never a guess.
- Waiting for a live priceThe order button reads this until the ticket has a live price, so no order goes out while its value, margin and fee read $0.
- No testnet price yetWith a testnet key the ticket prices at the testnet’s own price, named above the ticket as Testnet price. The chart and the order book show Hyperliquid’s main market, so the two can differ; until the testnet answers, the ticket waits.
Good to know
- The order book says in words when it has no orders, only one side, or looked wrong (the best bid above the best ask); a wrong one is read again from Hyperliquid.
- When a market has not traded for a while, the chart shows when its newest candle started, so an old candle is never read as the current one.
- A market that has only just begun has one bar to draw. The chart shows it with a line saying the chart starts here, rather than waiting as if it were still connecting.
- A paper position whose price has not been heard for a minute shows its mark and PnL in grey with the reason. Closing it, and its take-profit or stop-loss, wait for a live price.
- In the market lists a spot pair shows Hyperliquid’s mark price, read about every 20 seconds. On a thin spot book the point halfway between the best bid and ask can sit far from where the coin trades, so it is not used.
- Very small prices keep their digits: a coin at a fraction of a cent shows five significant figures, never 0.000.
- A chart’s history comes from candles stored on our side. When they stop short of now, the missing stretch is read from Hyperliquid, so a chart never ends hours early.
- Price alerts wait for a live price too; the price alerts article says how.
