What do the volume profile and market profile show?
Trade › Indicators › Volume › Volume Profile and Market Profile (TPO)
Volume Profile draws a bar per price row showing how much traded there, split into buying and selling, with the point of control and value area marked. Market Profile (TPO) draws a letter per time block instead, so you see where the day spent its time. Both come from stored bars, and the legend says which bar size.
Step by step
- Add itOpen Indicators and look under Volume, or search for profile. Each one sits on the price pane beside the candles.
- RangeVisible range follows what is on screen and Last N days asks for a fixed stretch ending now; both hang from the right edge of the chart. Each day and Each week draw one profile per session, growing from its first bar. Sessions are UTC days and weeks that start on Monday.
- Price rows and Value area %Price rows sets how many rows the price range is cut into. Value area % is the share of the total around the point of control that counts as the value area, 70 by default.
- Period (minutes)For Market Profile: how long each lettered block lasts. A is the first block of the session; the Initial balance line marks the first hour.
- Read the legendThe legend shows the range in use and which bars the profile came from, such as from 1-minute bars. Hover the study for show, settings and remove.
- If it cannot loadThe legend says why in one sentence, such as a range longer than the study covers, with Try again beside it. The chart never shows an empty profile in its place.
Good to know
- Buying and selling volume are estimated from each bar's direction, not counted from trades. The profile switches to trade volume once trade history is stored.
- Volume Profile covers up to 366 days, Market Profile up to 31. A new request goes out when the range changes, not with every scroll.
